Abstract

Background: Arthrodesis of the spine is a widely used surgical technique in the treatment of spinal diseases. But surgery may have some complications that can impact surgical results. It is therefore important to identify the risk factors for these complications. Objective: To find the patients' and surgery risk factors that lead to postoperative complications after transpedicular fixation. Methodology: A retrospective observance study was done by analyzing the medical records of patients undergone transpedicular fixation at Nawaz Sharif Social Security Hospital. A structured questionnaire was used to gather the data, and then analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0. The descriptive statistics of the variables used in this study were in the form of frequencies and percentages. Results: A variety of risk factors for mechanical failure in patients undergoing spinal arthrodesis were found. Mechanical failure was more common among female than male patients and in relative age groups 46-55 years. The most common primary diagnosis amongst these patients was scoliosis. Conclusion: Identification of surgery specific and patient specific risk factors for complications following transpedicular fixation could help to reduce peri-operative complications and improve outcomes for patients.
