KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS REGARDING APGAR SCORE IN SECONDARY LEVEL HOSPITALS CHARSADDA

Abstract

Background: The Apgar score is a quick neonatal assessment tool used worldwide to evaluate a newborn’s immediate health status at one and five minutes after birth. Although simple and widely adopted, its accuracy depends on the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers. In many secondary-level hospitals, inconsistent scoring and limited training contribute to poor neonatal outcomes. Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice of healthcare providers regarding the Apgar scoring system in secondary hospitals of Charsadda and to identify gaps that may affect neonatal health. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 healthcare providers working in labor rooms and neonatal care units in secondary hospitals of Charsadda. Participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured and validated questionnaire adapted from Akbar, Arshad and Shaheen (2021). Reliability was confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha (overall α = 0.80). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27. Results: Preliminary findings indicate variability in providers’ understanding and application of Apgar scoring. Common issues include incorrect interpretation of components, inconsistent scoring practices and limited exposure to structured neonatal assessment training. Heavy workload, staffing shortages and lack of standardized protocols acted as additional barriers. Conclusion: Significant knowledge and practice gaps exist among healthcare providers regarding Apgar scoring in secondary hospitals of Charsadda. Strengthening continuous professional development, structured training, and standardized clinical protocols may improve neonatal care and outcomes.
