Abstract

A surgeon’s emotional state significantly influences the operating theater environment, team dynamics, and patient outcomes. This abstract explores the interplay between a surgeon’s mood and its effects on the surgical team and patient care. Positive emotions, such as confidence and calmness, foster effective communication, collaboration, and trust within the team, leading to improved coordination and efficiency during procedures. Conversely, negative emotions, such as stress, anger, or anxiety, can disrupt team cohesion, impair decision-making, and increase the likelihood of errors. These emotional states also affect patient outcomes, with positive moods correlating with better postoperative recovery and patient satisfaction, while negative moods may contribute to complications or suboptimal care. Factors such as workplace stress, fatigue, and personal circumstances shape surgeons’ emotions, highlighting the need for emotional regulation strategies, including mindfulness, stress management training, and supportive team environments. By understanding and addressing the impact of a surgeon’s mood, healthcare systems can enhance team performance and patient safety. Further research is needed to quantify these effects and develop interventions to promote emotional resilience in surgical settings.
